Frequently asked questions
Do all countries use IBANs?
No. IBAN is standard across Europe and common in the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of Africa and the Caribbean, but the US, Canada, Australia and most of Asia use other account formats. The official list is maintained by SWIFT in the ISO 13616 registry.
Why do IBAN lengths differ between countries?
Each country maps its existing domestic account structure into the account part of the IBAN, so the total length is 2 (country) + 2 (check digits) + the domestic format. This ranges from 15 characters (Norway) to over 30.
Where does the data on these pages come from?
From the official SWIFT IBAN Registry (the ISO 13616 registration authority), cross-checked against the open-source ibantools library which this site also uses for validation. Each page shows its last verification date.
