Mongolia is a recent arrival on the IBAN map: the Bank of Mongolia registered the format with SWIFT in 2023, making MN one of the newest country codes a validator has to know. The IBAN is 20 characters with the BBAN pattern ^[0-9]{16}$.

Structure

We do not reproduce a literal registry example on this page; use the generator on this page to produce a structurally valid test IBAN if you need sample data for development or testing.

Why Mongolia adopted the IBAN

Before 2023, Mongolian beneficiaries supplied domestic account numbers of varying shapes in international payment instructions, and mismatched formats were a routine cause of delayed or returned transfers. Registering a fixed 20-character IBAN gives foreign banks a checkable identifier: length and checksum errors are caught at the sending bank instead of failing days later in Ulaanbaatar. The format is deliberately minimal - no branch field, no domestic check digit, just bank code plus account number - so the MOD-97 checksum is the only arithmetic protection.

Practical payment notes

Mongolia uses the tögrög (MNT), which is not freely traded internationally, so cross-border payments to Mongolian accounts are usually denominated in USD, EUR or CNY and converted locally. Mongolia is not in SEPA; European transfers go over SWIFT with the beneficiary bank’s BIC required alongside the IBAN. During the transition period, some Mongolian banks still communicate legacy account numbers, so if a beneficiary sends you a number that is not 20 characters starting with MN, ask them for the IBAN form rather than guessing the conversion.

The standard warning applies with extra weight on a young format: a validating MN IBAN is structurally correct, nothing more. It does not prove the account exists or identify its holder, and no SEPA-style Verification of Payee name check runs on this corridor. Confirm Mongolian beneficiary details through an independent channel before sending funds.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Mongolian IBAN?

A Mongolian IBAN is 20 characters: MN, two check digits, and a fully numeric 16-digit BBAN made of a 4-digit bank code and a 12-digit account number. There are no letters anywhere after the country code.

When did Mongolia start using IBANs?

Mongolia is one of the newest members of the IBAN registry, with the Bank of Mongolia registering the MN format with SWIFT in 2023. Adoption is part of the country's effort to streamline international payments, which previously relied on bare domestic account numbers in SWIFT messages.

Is Mongolia part of SEPA?

No. SEPA covers the European payments area, and Mongolia is not a participant. Transfers from Europe to a Mongolian IBAN travel as SWIFT payments through correspondent banks, so you should expect fees, possible intermediary deductions and settlement measured in days rather than hours.
