Kosovo’s IBAN is 20 characters with the numeric BBAN pattern ^[0-9]{16}$. The country code itself is the format’s most unusual feature: XK is a user-assigned placeholder, since Kosovo lacks a regular ISO 3166 code.
Structure
The official registry example is XK05 1212 0123 4567 8906, a SWIFT registry test value, not a live account:
XK05- country code and IBAN check digits12- 2-digit bank code assigned by the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo12- 2-digit branch code0123456789- the 10-digit account number06- the 2-digit national check pair closing the BBAN
Small fields, full coverage
With only two digits each for bank and branch, Kosovo’s format reflects a compact banking market of around a dozen licensed institutions. The trailing national check digits give the BBAN its own integrity layer on top of the IBAN’s MOD-97 wrapper, so a country-aware validator gets two independent arithmetic tests - useful, because a 20-character all-digit string is easy to mistype into another superficially plausible number.
Euro without eurozone, IBAN without SEPA
Kosovo presents an odd combination for payment routing. Its economy runs on the euro, adopted unilaterally in 2002, yet the country is not a SEPA participant, so a transfer from Frankfurt to Pristina is an international SWIFT payment even though both legs are in euros. Fees and settlement times therefore resemble those of genuinely foreign-currency corridors, and the beneficiary bank’s BIC is needed alongside the XK IBAN. Kosovo has applied for SEPA membership as part of the Western Balkans integration process, so this status deserves periodic rechecking.
The usual limits of validation apply. Passing the national check pair and the ISO checksum makes an XK IBAN well formed, not real: the account may be closed or never issued, and no checksum names its owner. Verification of Payee, the EU’s name-matching safeguard, does not cover this corridor, so confirm Kosovar beneficiary details independently.
