You need your IBAN whenever someone wants to pay you: an employer setting up salary, a friend splitting a bill across borders, a marketplace paying out your earnings, or a tax authority issuing a refund. Here is where to find it, by situation.
In your banking app
This is the fastest route for almost everyone. Open the app, select the account (current/checking, not the card), and look at the account details screen. Most apps show the IBAN directly under the account name, often with a copy button and a share button. The copy button matters: IBANs are long, and retyping them is how errors happen. If you see the IBAN displayed in groups of four characters, that is just formatting; the copied value normally has no spaces, and payment forms accept both.
In online banking (browser)
Log in, open the account overview, and click into the specific account. The IBAN typically appears in a section called “Account details”, “Account information” or similar, alongside the BIC/SWIFT code of your bank. Many banks also offer a printable “account details” or “bank confirmation” PDF here, which is handy when an employer or authority wants the details in writing.
On a bank statement
Every statement, paper or PDF, identifies the account it covers. Look at the header block on the first page: the IBAN is usually printed there, sometimes labelled simply “IBAN”, sometimes shown next to the domestic account number. Old statements work fine; your IBAN does not change unless you change accounts or your bank restructures (rare, and they will tell you).
Common situations
- Receiving salary: send your employer the IBAN plus the exact account holder name as your bank has it. Since Verification of Payee checks were introduced in the EU, a name mismatch can delay or flag a payment.
- Getting paid from abroad: the sender may also need your bank’s BIC and your bank’s address. All of these appear on the same account-details screen.
- Freelance invoices: put the IBAN on the invoice exactly as your bank displays it. Copy-paste, do not retype.
- You only know your card number: a card number is not an account number. Go through the app or statement instead.
If you still cannot find it
Call or message your bank, or visit a branch with ID. Do not use third-party “IBAN calculators” as your source of truth for real payments: they can help you sanity-check a format, but only your bank can confirm the IBAN actually attached to your account. And treat any unsolicited message telling you an IBAN “has changed”, especially for a supplier or landlord, as a fraud signal until verified through a known channel.
